Tridyne high-performance pressurization system

The tridyne high-performance pressurization system (HPPS) warms helium pressurant with a small chemical reaction. It saves about 50% of the mass of the pressurant gas and the pressurant Type-V tank.

How it works

  • Tridyne is helium enriched with small amounts of gaseous hydrogen (GH2) and gaseous oxygen (GOX).
  • Helium is the main gas, which makes the mix relatively safe.
  • The GH2 and GOX react in a catalyst bed. The reaction makes water and a large amount of heat.
  • The heat warms the helium. The tank includes an internal heat exchanger.

What it is not

It is not a blowdown system.

Cost and complexity

The system is low cost and has virtually no moving parts.

Questions

What is tridyne pressurization?

Tridyne adds small amounts of hydrogen and oxygen to helium. A catalyst bed turns them into water and heat, and the heat warms the helium. The system saves about 50% of the mass of the pressurant gas and tank.
